Private Canyon Residence
Tucked into one of Los Angeles' residential canyons is a garden that dissolves the line between private sanctuary and social landscape. It unfolds as a series of rooms—each one answering a specific desire: a place to gather, to move, to eat outdoors without leaving the garden, to retreat or even disappear.
Texture and materiality ground the garden experience and engage the senses. A fragrant planting palette elevates the mood, while the gravel paths create a gentle crunch underfoot. Water features aren't decorative flourishes; they reflect light and sound back through each room. Travertine pavers and limestone walls create visual tranquility. An elevated limestone pool edge becomes both architectural gesture and seating—a place the eye lands and the body settles. A pergola shelters the custom kitchen pavilion and dining areas with an anchoring presence that welcomes gatherings.
Each room stands alone while seamlessly blending into the entire environment. The built-in BBQ and custom outdoor kitchen serve as a perfect entertaining hub. The outdoor living room, fire feature, and other gathering “rooms”—all emerge from the landscape's logic rather than interrupting it. The wellness area – tucked out of view from the rest of the garden -- allows the transition from sauna to cold plunge with privacy and ease. And at dusk, the woven pendants, water feature lighting, and integrated uplighting transform the garden entirely.
