The Berendo Middle School is located in the Koreatown neighborhood adjacent to downtown Los Angeles. The school has been in continuous operation since 1911 and serves a diverse community in a highly urbanized environment. The opportunity to develop an underutilized green space on campus lead us to design a concept plan that was installed under our supervision as part of the hundreds of volunteers ‘Mayor’s Day of Service’. This pro-bono project included raised vegetable beds, an amphitheater ‘Outdoor Classroom’, a reading garden, and a dry streambed with native plants.
Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa attended the garden’s installation and commended the many volunteers as well as our design. This garden encouraged the community to gather and connect with each other to improve the school grounds.
